Over time, as Indian entrepreneurs became part of the Silicon Val- ley establishment, TiE lost much of its grassroots energy and evolved into more of an exclusive club—serving its fee-paying charter members rather than the broader community it once galvanized. But its core idea—give first, expect nothing—remains a timeless blueprint for building ecosystems anywhere. Every TiE charter member, experienced entrepreneur, and every policymaker serious about building a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem, must read Brad Feld’s upcom- ing book, Give First: The Power of Mentorship. This is a cookbook for creating vibrant, resilient startup communi- ties—something TiE seems to have forgotten, and govern- ments still need to learn. Brad is someone I’ve known and admired since I moved to Silicon Valley in 2009. It may not be the case in business, but this ethos of giving and mentoring is deeply rooted in Indian tradition—the guru-shishya model has guided knowledge-sharing in this country for centuries. What’s missing is a cultural shift toward institutionalized busi- ness mentorship, radical trust, and a commitment to lifting others as we rise. As an Indian-American who’s had a front-row seat to Silicon Valley’s rise, worked closely with India’s most visionary founders, and is now building a global company from India, I can say with con- fidence: if India embraces the Give First mindset, it won’t just build great companies—it will create the most inclusive and impactful innovation economy the world has ever seen. We’d expect our government to go to war to defend it. But in attacking Harvard University, that’s exactly what the Trump administration is trying to do. Despite the school’s failures and flaws, it remains a vital national asset – and the administration’s actions are far more dangerous to America than they are to Harvard. When you tour the UK’s Cambridge University, your guide will show you empty niches containing stone fragments. They’re the remnants of statues smashed by Puritan fanatics during the English Civil War. But Cambridge survived and flourished. Universities are enormously resilient and count time in centuries, not electoral cycles. Long after the Trump administration is gone, there will still be a Harvard. But an America deprived of everything Harvard contributes will be far poorer and weaker. I have a stake in this battle: I spent seven years on the faculty at Harvard Business School and still teach in the Harvard Kennedy School’s Senior Execu- tive Fellows program. But I’m also the first to agree with colleagues who say the university has fallen short of its ideals. Its own reports on antisemitism and anti- Muslim bias on campus contain devastat- ing revelations about the school’s inability to maintain an orderly and safe learn- ing environment for everyone. Harvard should better protect its students – even, when necessary, from each other. It must guarantee freedom of speech on campus. And it should find ways to have more di- verse political representation among both students and faculty. But the Trump administration isn’t try- ing to fix Harvard.
